The 1st Frigate Squadron was established in 2000 as a replacement for the Cruiser Force, when the Rhiannon-I-class Frigates were put into service. In 2017, with the introduction of the newer Rhiannon-II-class Frigates, the three vessels of the squadron were replaced by their name-twins.
Traditionally, the 1st Frigate Squadron contains the three 'female' Rhiannon-II-class Frigates, SDFS Rhiannon, SDFS Carman Fea and SDFS Abhcan. Current commanding officer of the squadron is Captain Celina Reathaí of the Tribe of Westmeath aboard Rhiannon.
