The Boatwright's Song, also known as Chip's Song, is a song of the Selkie about the boatwright Chip and a deal he made with the God Gavida.

Lyrics

Chip worked as a boatwright,
As line from the very start,
Working in a boatyard
Building on the mighty Imeall.
One day Chip was lazy on his job,
As Gavida appeared to him,
He held a roll of silver
And a bucket full of nails.
Gavida said to little Chip:
'Take these nails and silver roll,
But you'll have to take this rat
And I will take your soul!'
Chip hated the rat with heart and mind,
The rat squealed and hissed
But the bucket full of nails and silver
Were too much to resist!
Chip went lazily to work
To get rid of the pesky rat
And there wouldn't be a problem
With its death after the fact.
But Gavida's rat rather wouldn't die,
No matter what Chip tried,
And the rat attacked the boatwright
And he bit him in the eye!
It seemed as if the Imeall's rats
Fell under Gavida's spell,
They ran after Chip no matter where he went,
they made his building life a living hell!
He slowly lost his mind,
He slowly lost his family,
He quickly lost his job,
He had to join the City's Navy!
A tree grows from a pip,
A yard will build a ship,
As Gavida is my master,
I will get you, Chip!
A tree grows from a pip,
A yard will build a ship,
As Gavida is my master,
I will get you, Chip!
The rats chased poor Chip
Up the gangplank of his rivership,
They bit him up the rear in its tender flesh
Until Chip finally flipped.
He cried to his Captain
To turn around the rig,
The Captain spied the madness
And they chugged in the brig.
Now Gavida's rat had his man,
He knew what he was to do,
He commanded the other rats
To chew through all the planks.
The water rushed in for the coldest caress,
The ship went down,
She was smashed around on rocks,
On which the rats danced around!
A tree grows from a pip,
A yard will build a ship,
As Gavida is my master,
I will get you, Chip!
A tree grows from a pip,
A yard will build a ship,
As Gavida is my master,
I got you, little Chip!"
