The Sciathán Iolar was a heavy, twin-engine, twin-boom fighter in service of the SDF-Army and the SDF-Navy in the roles of long-range fighters, reconnaissance planes, attack aircraft and night fighters. The first aircraft-mounted radars of the SDF were mounted on these aircraft.

Armament
The Iolar went through a number of armaments during her service life, from six Gabha R-22 machine guns in the wings and two more in the rear cockpit, to four 20mm autocanons in the wings and two Gabha R-22 machine guns in the rear cockpit.
A common feature of all variants was, that they could carry up to 500 kilograms of bombs, torpedoes or, after they came up, rockets, which made them fearsome attack aircraft.
